English words from Bantu

(languages spoken by over 400 closely related groups in central, east-central, and southern Africa, belonging to the South Central subgroup of the Niger-Congo language family and including Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Zulu, Xhosa, etc.)

The words in this unit have been compiled from a list of the "Bantu" languages. The parts of speeches and definitions were added from a variety of sources.

A very dangerous organism living in Africa and suck blood in animals and humans: When taking a trip around Africa, Janet had to be careful not to be bitten by a teste fly that could transmit the parasite Trypanosoma

A religion that evolved from African polytheism: One characteristic of voodoo, that is valued and exists in Haiti, is the worship of ancestors
yam (s) (noun), yams (pl)
1. A normally cultivated climbing plant of the genus Dioscorea: Jim planted yams in his yard because he wanted to have the edible roots to eat with his dinner!
2. The starchy tuberous roots of the yam vine: Sally loved to eat the yams, or sweet potatoes, from her husband's garden and she found out that the were widely grown in the Eastern and Western hemispheres.
zombie (s) (noun), zombies (pl)
A supernaturally animated non-living person, moved by magic or unnatural forces: In the horror story about voodooism, Sharon red about zombies slowly walking around in the cold, foggy, and wet graveyard with bloody knives in their hands
