The systematic study of all aspects of the biological basis of social behavior in insects: Insect sociobiology investigates such aspects of behavioral conduct such as mating practices, pack hunting, and territorial fighting.

Any period between molts (shedding outgrown skin) during the course of development: An instar refers to one of various phases of growth between the molts of anthropods before they reach the adulthood of sexual maturity.

Between different nests: Internidal abodes involve more than one nest whether of the same colony or of diverse ones.
intranidal (adjective) (not comparable)
Referring to an occurrence within a single nest: Intranidal activities or situations take place inside the nests of certain organisms, like those of birds, bees, and insects.
intrinsic rate of increase (s) (noun) (no pl)
Symbolized by r, the fraction by which a population is growing in each instant of time: The intrinsic rate of increase is often used in the population ecology of insects to determine how the factors of the environment affect the rate of population growth of insect pests.
invitation signal (s) (noun), invitation signals (pl)
A signal used to induce another member of the same species to join in performing an act: Two examples of invitation signals include following an odor trail or cooperating in adult transport.
isometry (s) (noun), isometries (pl)
The equal development rate in two parts of a growing form of life: Isometry is the condition in which the sizes of two body parts remain constant relative to each other as total body size increases.
kairomone (s) (noun), kairomones (pl)
Any substance or blend of substances emitted by an organism that elicits a response adaptively favorable to the receiver but not the emitter: Kairomone is a chemical that is beneficial to a different species, but is harmful to, and at the expense of the the organism producing it.
kin recognition (s) (noun) (no pl)
Kin detection; identification of and discrimination toward various categories of relatives: Kin recognition is the ability of an organism to differentiate between a close genetic family member and a non-family member..
kin selection (s) (noun) (no pl)
A natural choice or selection arising from a selfless behavior by animals towards members of their own species: Kin selection is the selective preference of genes as a result of one or more individuals' favoring or disfavoring the survival and reproduction of relatives who possess the same genes by common descent which usually excludes offspring.
kinopsis (s) (noun), kinopses (pl)
Alarm communication or recruitment mediated by the sight of movement in nest mates alone. In her biology book, Susan read about kinopsis as a method among certain forms of life to warn others indicating danger.
labial palps
The segmented appendages arising from the labium, or lower "lip" of the head.
labium
The lower "lip", or lowermost mouthpart-bearing segment of insects, located just below the mandibles and the maxillae.
lamella
A thin, plate-like process.
lanuginous
Referring to hair that is woolly or like soft down.
